Juin 1914, dans le sud-ouest de la France. Henri et Etienne de Cazenac sont deux frères. Le premier est officier géographe, le second se destine à une carrière de séminariste. Loin de là, dans les Balkans, à Sarajevo, l'archiduc François-Ferdinand est assassiné. Un conflit meurtrier embrase alors l'Europe. Le destin des deux frères n'échappera pas à ce terrible chaos.
